The University of Manitoba Global Engineering Brigades (UMGEB) is a team of engineering students within the UofM’s sustainable project group, UMEARTH. From February 17-24th, the 12 students and their two faculty advisors travelled to Honduras with the organization Global Brigades to partner in their mission of bringing sustainable development to under-resourced communities.

Under the direction of generous local engineers and community members, the team participated in the mapping and design proposal for a water distribution system that will improve vital water access to over 100 rural homes in El Bailadero, Honduras. The students also helped construct a gravity powered hydraulic ram pump, the first of its kind in the area. The nature of the work required students to consider the challenges associated with engineering within geographic, socioeconomic, cultural, and political factors that determine the success and viability of a design.

This trip not only provided invaluable engineering experience but helped foster new perspective and empathy, qualities that are critical for future change-makers. Each member was left with a deeper understanding of their potential for impact as an engineer. The team hopes for a continued partnership between the UofM and Global Brigades that creates meaningful contributions in developing communities and extends to our communities at home through a dedication to sustainable solutions and local empowerment.
