B. Comm. (Hons.), LL.B
Kevin Bolt didn’t always want to be a lawyer. After graduating from St Paul’s High School Kevin enrolled in the Faculty of Commerce at the University of Manitoba. The Accounting and Finance Pattern appealed to Kevin as he had an uncanny knack for numbers and planned on becoming a Chartered Accountant like his father. One of the compulsory courses in 3rd year Commerce was Commercial Law. This course excited Kevin and tweaked his interest in the law, so he took another optional course in Commercial Law in his last year. After this, Kevin became hooked on the legal aspects of business. Kevin graduated with his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) Degree (Accounting and Finance Pattern) and received an award for the second highest grade point average in Commerce. He decided that his commerce background would serve him well as a lawyer and enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba. Kevin graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1978 receiving awards for the second highest grade point average and the highest marks in Administrative Law and Negotiable Instruments.
As a seasoned professional and with his extensive knowledge of the law Kevin has developed a reputation for creative problem solving resulting in difficult and complex deals being successfully closed in a timely manner. Kevin honed his legal skills and talents as a partner at leading law firms within the city. Kevin has significant experience in Commercial, Real Estate, and Corporate Law. Within this realm, he has particular expertise in Financial Services including drafting, on behalf of major lenders, comprehensive loan agreements and supporting securities involving credit facilities in excess of five hundred million dollars. Kevin has shared his expertise by presenting at numerous Law Society of Manitoba Continuing Legal Education Seminars and publishing various legal papers in the Law Society of Manitoba Continuing Legal Education Material, including papers on Complex Commercial Transactions and Multi-Level Financing. Some significant accomplishments of Kevin’s career have been the creation of the first “Air Title” in Manitoba, assisting with the transition of Winnipeg’s largest hospital to the WRHA, establishing a “Personal Services” department within a major law firm and acting as a trustee of a national company involved in “high-level” decision making, including quarterly and annual meetings to review, approve and monitor budgets and business plans.
Kevin has had the opportunity to experience the beauty and potential of Northern Canada through his many visits to various remote northern communities (some above the Arctic Circle). He is conversant in the intricacies of First Nations Law including leasing on reserve lands, and the placement of security and realization of security on behalf of non-aboriginal parties involved with loan and leasing transactions with First Nations.
Kevin thinks Winnipeg is a wonderful place to live, work, and play and has supported his community in a variety of ways. From volunteering at Winnipeg Harvest, being an account executive for the United Way of Winnipeg, former vice-chair HSC Research Foundation or being on committees at both the Winnipeg and Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Kevin believes in the potential of his community. As a proud father of 4 children, he wants Winnipeg to be a city where young people can flourish.
On a more personal note, Kevin loves reading, particularly the mystery genre and definitely knows his way around the kitchen where he is apt to whip up a gourmet dinner. Kevin is a sports aficionado who loves watching all team sports. His passion however is golf and in his spare time you’ll find him out on the golf course perfecting his game and still striving for the “elusive” hole-in-one.
