Brandon Trask

JD (Manitoba), LLM (Toronto)

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Brandon Trask completed his Juris Doctor (JD) at the University of Manitoba and graduated with his Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Toronto. In 2020, Brandon was appointed to the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law, where he teaches Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Evidence, Mental Health and Criminal Law, and Law and Disability, along with co-supervising a legal clinic.

Brandon is Counsel at PKF Lawyers, where he primarily provides support with respect to complex legal issues involving constitutional law considerations (with a particular focus on the Charter), criminal law matters, professional discipline proceedings, and regulatory matters. He also provides advisory services and consulting through PKF Lawyers, focused on the intersection of law and policy.

Following the completion of his LLM at the University of Toronto, Brandon moved to Atlantic Canada. He practiced as a Crown attorney in both Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia, most recently with the Appeals and Special Prosecutions Section of the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service.

While in practice as a Crown prosecutor, Brandon was involved with hundreds of cases across two levels of court in Newfoundland and Labrador and three levels of court in Nova Scotia. He also regularly appeared on behalf of the Crown at the Criminal Code Review Board in Nova Scotia and has experience with mental health courts.

Brandon has taught law-focused courses at the university level since 2015 and is an award-winning educator. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba as a full-time law faculty member, he taught part-time through Memorial University of Newfoundland’s law and society program, teaching over 1,100 students between 2015 and 2020.

Additionally, Brandon was formerly a biweekly newspaper columnist. He has repeatedly been a radio panelist and guest and has also been interviewed for national and local television. Brandon has written op-ed pieces for a variety of newspapers, including The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, and The Ottawa Citizen, and has also been interviewed for many newspaper articles.
